In 1977, Skokie, Illinois was home to the largest number of Holocaust survivors outside of Israel. Thousands of survivors had found refuge in the tranquil village. They tried to put the horrors of the Holocaust in the past, but their peace was shattered when they heard that Nazis were coming to march in Skokie.

The Skokie controversy created a remarkable moment in American history as the nation vigorously debated the meaning of the First Amendment.
